What's Changing?
After Feb. 2, 2026, older versions of the Duo Mobile Application (earlier than version 4.85) will no longer work for two-step login at UC Berkeley. To continue accessing campus systems that require CalNet two-step, you must update your Duo Mobile app or set up an alternative authentication method.
What You Need to Do
Step 1: Check Your Device
Your phone must meet these minimum requirements to support the latest version of Duo Mobile:
- Apple devices: iOS 16.0 or newer
- Android devices: Android 12 or newer
How to check your phone version:
- iPhone/iPad: Go to Settings > General > About > iOS Version
- Android: Go to Settings > About Phone > Android Version
Step 2: Update Duo Mobile
If your device meets the requirements above:
- Open the Apple App Store or Google Play Store
- Search for "Duo Mobile"
- Tap Update
- Open Duo Mobile and ensure it's working
What If Your Phone Is Too Old to Run the Latest Duo Mobile Version?
If your phone can't upgrade to iOS 16.0 (Apple) or Android 12, you have some options:
- Use a different device for Duo Mobile (another smartphone or tablet that meets requirements).
- Get bypass codes. Note: You will have to repeat the process of generating these 10 at a time.
- Request (or purchase) a Security Key.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is this change happening?
Duo is ending support for older app versions to improve security and performance. Older versions will no longer receive security updates and may have compatibility issues.
What happens if I don't update?
After February 2, 2026, when logging in, you may be prompted to use another method of authentication, such as bypass codes, SMS (if you are a student), or security keys. Be prepared, as you may not be able to log in to campus systems that require two-step authentication, including:
- CalCentral
- bCourses
- bMail
- HR/Payroll systems
- VPN
- And other protected campus services
How do I know if I need to update?
If you're currently using Duo Mobile and it's working, check your app version:
- Open Duo Mobile
- Go to Settings (gear icon)
- Look for "App Version"
- If it's earlier than 4.85, you need to update.
Be sure to note trailing zeroes and decimal points in version numbers. For example, version 3.40 is not 3.4.0, but rather 3.40.0. As another example, version 4.85 is older than 4.102.0. (not to be read as 4.10.2)
Can I still use my current phone?
Only if it supports iOS 16.0 (for iPhones) or Android 12 (for Android phones) or newer. If your phone is too old to upgrade, you'll need to use a different device or an alternative authentication method.
I updated my app - what do I do next?
Nothing! As long as Duo Mobile is working for CalNet two-step logins, you're all set.
