Enroll a Smartphone

Before Enrolling Your Smartphone

  • Have your charged smartphone with you.

  • Have access to a desktop or laptop computer with an internet connection.

  • icon-computer The enrollment process starts from your laptop or desktop computer.

  • icon-tablet A few steps in, you will switch to using your smartphone to scan a QR code.

  • You can enroll more than one device in the enrollment session.

Enroll a smartphone at mycalnet.berkeley.edu

  1. Use your CalNet ID and passphrase to log in to mycalnet.berkeley.edu/account-manager/.
  2. Click on Manage 2-Step Verification in the left-hand menu.
  3. Click on DUO Device manager.
  4. Log in to the DUO Device manager.
  5. You will be prompted to log in with your CalNet ID and passphrase, again, and to complete a 2-Step.
  6. Once authenticated, you will land in the Duo Device Management Portal. Your existing devices (if any) will be listed. Select Add a New Device. 
  7. Select Duo Mobile.
  8. Enter your device’s phone number, including the area code. Example: (201) 555-5555.
  9. Select Add Phone Number.
  10. Verify that your number is correct and select Yes, it’s correct.
  11. You may be asked to confirm ownership of your phone number. If so, select Send me a passcode. You will receive a text with a 6-digit passcode that you will enter into the box to verify your device.
  12. From your smartphone: Download the Duo Mobile App. To locate the app, follow the links on the Duo website or, depending on your type of phone, go to the Apple Store, Google Play Store, or Windows Store. 
    1. Search for the free “Duo Mobile" app and download it.
    2. Open the Duo Mobile app. Click Allow for “Duo Mobile” Would Like to Send You Notifications" (this is required for Duo Push to work).
    3. Click Add Account
    4. Click OK to let Duo Mobile access your camera, which will be used for scanning the barcode.
  13. On your computer, click Next.
  14. Point your smartphone’s camera at the QR barcode on your computer screen to scan the barcode. (A QR barcode is the square with all the squiggles.)
  15. Once you have successfully scanned, a green check mark will appear on the QR code to confirm that your smartphone device is linked to your account. Click Continue.
  16. You may be prompted to name your account after pressing the green Continue button. We suggest leaving it as CalNet UC Berkeley, or choosing a name that is obvious to you.

Enrollment Completed. Congratulations! You’ve successfully enrolled your smartphone. Now, when you log in to campus systems, you will be prompted for a second-step verification. 

Using a Duo Push to 2-Step 

A "push" is an approval request you can send to your smartphone or tablet.

Step 1: Log in to your CalNet account using your usual credentials.

This is your first-step verification.

Step 2: Receive Push notification

After entering in your CalNet credentials, the below screen will appear notifying you that a Duo Push has been sent to your registered device. Open the Duo Mobile app to view the notification.

Note: If Duo Push is not the default authentication choice that appears once logging into CalNet, you can click on “Other Options'' and select "Duo Push" which will be under the list of your registered devices.

Step 3: Approve Push

Approve the login request to complete your login, and you're done!

Using a Verified Duo Push to 2-Step

Starting March 18, 2025, you may see the Verified Duo Push screen–where you'll be asked to enter a security code in the Duo Mobile App–instead of tapping the green checkmark. This step-up authentication occurs for high-risk logins, while regular logins from familiar devices and locations remain unchanged.

Examples of high-risk scenarios include:
  • Accessing from a new device or IP address
  • Traveling to a new location
  • Unusual activity, such as multiple failed access attempts

Step 1: Log In to CalNet

Log in to your CalNet account using your usual credentials. This is your first-step verification.

Step 2: A four-digit code will appear on the login screen

Step 3: Open the Duo Mobile App on your mobile device and enter the 4-digit verification code from the login screen

Step 4: Click Verify. Once the verification is complete, an “Approved” message will display, and you will be logged in

Using Passcodes from Duo Mobile to 2-Step

You can use a passcode from the Duo App to complete the 2-Step on your smartphone from anywhere in the world–even if you do not have a WiFi or cellular connection! Note: Passcodes are single-use only; you must enter a new passcode each time you verify. Duo deactivates any old, unused passcodes once you request new ones. 

Step 1: View Passcode. On your phone, go to Duo Mobile. Tap the "CalNet - UC Berkeley" entry to view a passcode. 

Step 2: Log In to CalNet Log in to your CalNet account with your usual credentials. This is your first-step verification.

Step 3: Enter a Passcode. When prompted to 2-Step, the Duo Mobile Passcode will appear if it is the default 2-Step choice. Select Other options if it is not the default when prompted to enter your credentials. 

Passcodes can be generated from the Duo Mobile app or from the CalNet Account Manager. (See Requesting Passcodes for instructions on how to get one or more passcodes.)
